Having agreed with Jo and Andy of Alexandrite Siberians to adopt Danae we kept checking their website regularly for updates, photos and videos of her. At the time there were updates about two litters of kittens; those of Gemini (Danae's mom) and those of Pantera (Hermes's mom). (1) A month later we came across some photos of Pantera's kittens, one of which got engraved on our minds and hearts:

Over the next few weeks we caught ourselves looking at this photo more and more - until we realised we were in love with this little boy. Jo had named him Alexandrite Mercury and described him as a 'cute, stocky little guy'. Little did any of us know at the time about the wonderful, fun personality this kitten was about to develop. Yet, just looking at this photo, we knew Hermes was 'our' cat; in our hearts he was a member of our family. So we got in touch with Jo and Andy and asked if he was available for adoption. Though they had  an offer for him (he was to go to USA to be a stud) Jo and Andy, considering the kitten's best interests, agreed to let us have him (thanks guys!!!!). He would join us together with Danae when they were three months old.

The minute we met Hermes we knew we had made the right choice. The little kitten made himself comfortable on Marina's shoulder and went to sleep, enjoying all the attention. When we were back at home Hermes helped himself to a massive plate of food and set about to discover his new surroundings. He first tried to be friends with Danae (who arrived with him) but she was in no mood for social niceties. So he politely ignored her and started bonding with us. It was an absolutely amazing experience; the minute we were approaching him he would roll on his back, show us his tummy for tickling and would start purring loudly. Within 48 hours he was responding to his name.

There were two things that characterised Hermes during kittenhood: his calm character - always avoiding confrontation by choice rather than fear - and his clear desire to spend all day being fussed over.  A very bright kitten, he was clearly noticing and learning: at times you could see him 'thinking' and considering his course of action. Being a bon viveur by nature he enjoyed soft furnishings and good food and treats, which he consumed in considerable quantities. When he was not eating he was purring. The loudest purrs came when he was getting in his favourite bed, ready for sleep: the first few times he did it we actually thought there was a motorbike revving outside the house. His sleeping position - always stretched out and most of the times tummy up indicates clearly how confident and comfortable he was feeling. He also did the cuttest thing - which he still does as an adult when he is really enjoying a cuddle (i.e. all the time): he burried his face in the soft furnishing (and now in our arms) as a show of happiness:

Hermes has got a really sweet nature. He loves everything and everybody and, most of all, he loves being loved. He will do all sorts to show his love and affection to each and everyone of his housemates. And as is usually the case with those that give love so freely, he also gets lots of love. Name: Hermes. Profession: Heart winner. Take a look, for example, at this little routine:

One of the ways in which Hermes shows his love is to share; he happily shares toys, food and treats, even activities: though he always makes sure he gets lots of own time with us and cuddle sessions daily (he comes to find us when the other cats are out) he will happily join in games with the other cats and wait his turn to chase the laser pointer or the balls, feathers etc.
