“The so-called psyche or butterfly is generated from caterpillars that grow on green leaves, chiefly leaves of the raphanus, which some call crambe or cabbage.”  Aristotle

Colias aurorina (family: Pieridae; common name: Greek clouded yellow butterfly)

This species is endemic to Greece. It is a spectacular butterfly, somewhat greenish on the underside and a fiery rich red orange on the upperside. This flashing of green and rich red is highly distinctive in the field.  Like most Colias any view of the upperside is incredibly rare, if ever seen naturally. We waited till it stopped to feed which is always the best moment to take a picture of it. Not a very strong flyer, it will usually settle somewhere close if disturbed.
