"In Flanders fields the poppies blow between the crosses, row on row, that mark our place,
and in the sky, the larks, still bravely singing, fly scarce heard among the guns below. " Lieut. Col. John McCrae

Papaver rhoeas (Family: Papaveraceae; common names: Corn poppy, Field poppy, Flanders poppy, Red poppy) - Life cycle This is another album devoted to the life cycle of a flower. Red poppies are amongst the commonest flowers yet very few have ever noticed how the flowers open or how they die. The photo showing the hairy covering tissue has opened and the packed flower with its bright red colour is visible. A day later it will open in full as shown in the next pictures. The central cone of the flower, as seen at the bottom of the flower in the fourth and from the side in the fifth photo is all that will remain when the petals are gone, the seeds of a beautiful flower. The next two shots show the central cone, gradually being deprived of all other elements except the core cone. A short lived beautiful flower which is characteristic of spring (to many people the appearance of the red “dots” in the fields is the first sign that winter is definitely gone) and Remembrance.
