Columba palumbus (Family: Columbidae; common name: Wood pigeon) Wood pigeons favour trees near riversides to nest; though pretty tame in some areas they are quite aware of the human presence and they will quickly fly away, particularly during Spring when the foliage is not thick enough to make them feel safe. We shot these pigeons in Sale park, in Manchester. One of the larger pigeons, this bird is quite pretty with its distinctive white marks and the pink breast. The wood pigeons are particularly attractive when displaying, however taking a photo of them is quite difficult as the tree branches and leaves, perfect for hiding the birds from potential predators, are guaranteed to ruin the shot.
