"I agree that all good photographs are documents, but I also know that all documents are certainly not good photographs. Furthermore, a good photographer does not merely document, he probes the subject, he "uncovers" it..." Berenice Abbott

Summer Fires

These photos were taken in summer 2007, during the great fire that devastated Peloponnese (Messinia) and in summer 2009, when Athens went through the same nightmare. Catching everything in photos is definitely not possible. I focussed on three aspects of it. The fire itself, showing a pine tree which was just attacked by the fire and a night shot which shows the size of the fire itself as it finds its way to the forest. The emotions of the people, as shown in the photo of the mourning lady, the three guys that come back after fighting the fire using branches of trees and the desperate face of the policeman who realizes there is almost nothing he can do. Then comes the human efforts to stop the fire. I chose three photos of planes fighting the fire. One showing an airplane diving through the dense smoke, very close to the roofs of the house, one showing the typical dropping of water and one showing an elegant figure of an airplane just starting to climb after dropping water. I took this last shot as I was fascinated by the various shapes of the vapors as well as by the birds at the bottom of the picture.
