"The horses paw and prance and neigh, fillies and colts like kittens play,
And dance and toss their rippled manes shining and soft as silken skeins ..."  Oliver Wendell Holmes

Konik horses

Konik horses are the descendants of the prehistoric wild European Tarpan horses, now extinct. The race came about in the 19th century, when Polish farmers crossed their own workhorses with the Tarpans. They named the descendants Konik horses, meaning little horses.

These horses are used in many landscape preservation projects here in Belgium. They can take care of themselves and can withstand very rough weather conditions. These photos were taken during a guided tour through a reserve close to my home.
