"Nobody of any real culture, for instance, ever talks nowadays about the beauty of sunset. Sunsets are quite old fashioned. To admire them is a distinct sign of provincialism of temperament. Upon the other hand they go on. "  Oscar Wilde

Sunset in the Mozia Salt Marsh, Sicily, Italy

Believe it or not this is not Africa. It is one of the Trapani (among the oldest in Europe, in Sicily) salt marshes where – still nowdays - table salt is produced. Old, picturesque, some way historical, windmills are still used to drain water into the basin ponds where – once water has dried up – salt is collected.

The area spreads over about 1.000 hectares, including the "Saline of Trapani e Paceco" (Salt marsh of Trapani and Paceco), the Stagnone (a big lagoon hosting – almost all year long – lots of wild birds), and the "Salt Marsh" of Isola di Mozia (the Island of Mozia or Mothya: colonized by the Phoenicians in 700 BC and razed to the ground in 397 BC. The island has an interesting history illustrated by its ruins; all these places are linked by “Via del Sale” (the “Salt Road”) moving trough piles of white, eye-catching, drying in the sun salt with the sea in the background.

This photo was taken at Mozia Salt Marsh in August, while the sun was going setting.

Sunset at Kiny Bay, Syros, Greece

The sunset at Kini bay is known as one of the most beautiful sunsets on Syros Island. So, how could I ever resist taking a picture of it?

Sunset at Samos Island, Greece

The church of Panagia Makrini is probably my favorite spot in the island of Samos. The church is built at the entrance of a cave high on the mountain of Kerkis. The only way to get there is by following a path for a 35 minute walk uphill. The path is steep but the scenery is certainly rewarding. This year I decided to join the all night long annual celebration of the church and thus I was able to admire the gorgeous sunset of the Aegean sea as the sun was slowly setting between the sea and the island of Ikaria.
