"Man can now fly in the air like a bird, swim under the ocean like a fish, he can burrow into the ground like a mole. Now if only he could walk the earth like a man, this would be paradise." Tommy Douglas

Inferno: Peloponessos on Fire, 2007 In August 2007 Greece was on fire. More than 500.000 acres of land and agricultures turned to ashes in Peloponessos during a fire which, assisted by the blazing wind, kept burning for four days. We were there with our cameras and made a tour of this area the day after. Indeed, it was “the day after”. Nothing was left there. No trees, no animals, not even colour. The fire had taken everything away. What was even more frightening was the silence. A deafening silence broken every now and then by a passing bird. The branches of the bush, still bent by the wind captured the disaster in an image that only nature can create. The sight of the burned snake, which died trying to escape the inevitable, is worth more than a thousand words; lots of wild animals as well as farmed stock shared the same horrid fate. The trunk of an old tree was turned to an ink drawing. The trunk which still smokes is an echo of the forest which used to be there. What used to be a tree became a lifeless sculpture. We hope that the voice of those images can be heard by the perpetrators of such crimes. A ray of hope: a single turtle, with burnt feet, stumbles through the ashes in the forest of Ancient Olympia ... Photos by George J. Reclos, Marina Parha and Nicholas Parchas 1.
