"What a desolate place would be a world without a flower! It would be a face without a smile, a feast without a welcome. Are not flowers the stars of the earth, and are not our stars the flowers of heaven? " Mrs. Clara Lucas Balfour

Tragopogon porrifolius (Purple salsify) - Life cycle Tragopogon porrifolius is a very common plant in some areas. When the plants start to grow they simply pass unnoticed, until the first purple flowers open at the top of long stems. The flowers themselves are a delight to see with their purple – yellow combination. They do not last long, they get dehydrated and finally shrink to an amorphous mass. By that time, a new long upright stem appears which carries the seeds at the top. The formation at the top will slowly open and the seeds will start to come out one by one forming a globe like that of a dandelion but considerably larger. With time the seeds are dispersed by the wind. Soon after, nothing will remind the visitor of all the beauty there once was. Photos by Marina Parha and George J.
