Podiceps cristatus Pair (Grebe Pair) This is one of the pairs that have mated at Sale water park. Having observed them for a while (which allowed them to get used to our presence) we slowly got in the water and started approaching the nest to take photos of the eggs or the young (as it happened it was eggs). The female left the nest and got in the water, swimming next to the male. Their interaction was amazing: at some point she looked at him and prompted him to 'do something about us' - which is when he started darting annoyed looks towards us (first and second photo). We immediately left and returned to our hideout. The pair swam leisurly around the nest, each time coming a bit closer. Eventually the female checked under the nest to ensure it was still secure and having found everything to her satisfaction she got inside. In these photos the pair swims together, checking around for possible aggressors. Interestingly enough while we were in the lake the pair kept closely together. Once we got out of the water the female stayed with the eggs while the male returned to his usual routine, often swimming far away from the nest. Photos
