Himantopus himantopus (Family: Recurvirostridae; common name: Black-winged Stilt; Common Stilt ; Gk: καλαμοκανάς) The Black-winged Stilt is a widely distributed long-legged wader in the avocet and stilt family. There is some debate about the taxonomy of individuals currently classified as one species. As a general rule individuals with a black back are males while a brown back indicates a female. Sub-adult birds have a grey hue on their backs. These birds are seen quite often in Strophylia reserve (West Peloponnese, Greece). We managed to get a lot of photos of them either searching for food in the waterland or flying over it. Photos by Mahi Goula and George Parchas Shooting Data: 1. Camera: Canon EOS 5D Mark II 2.
