Botaurus stellaris (Family: Ardeidae; common name: Eurasian Bittern; Great Bittern) These photos were taken in February 2010 during the first meeting of Greek wild life photographers. I had never seen a eurasian bittern before since it is a very shy bird and avoids close encounters with humans. Its ability to hide itself very efficiently in the marshes makes it even more difficult to spot. You can usually hear it; its voice reminds me of a ship horn. Τhis year the Evros delta was flooded and the water covered huge areas. Thus, bitterns were forced to come to areas a bit further away from the delta, which allowed us to observe and take photos of them. Photos
