“Photography, as we all know, is not real at all. It is an illusion of reality with which we create our own private world.”  Arnold Newman

Fulica atra (common name: Coot)

Weather conditions can be harsh for all wildlife. The pond where I shot these coot was almost completely frozen, and walking was the only way for the birds to get to the other side of their habitat. The light was excellent with a low winter sun behind me.

Coot II

The first photo was shot in York, at one of the ponds of York University. The bird was carrying a stick to build its nest. We have noticed the birds building nests near the shores of lakes or rivers, in shallow waters, amongst plants. The next two photos have been shot at Sale Park. The bird, though small and generally peaceful, is quite capable of defending itself against the much bigger ducks and the quite aggressive gulls with which it shares its habitat.
