"That little bird has chosen his shelter. Above it are the stars and the deep heaven of worlds. Yet he is rocking himself to sleep without caring for tomorrow's lodging, calmly clinging to his little twig, and leaving God to think for him."  Martin Luther

Larus ridibundus

We were visiting Chester zoo to enjoy wildlife and a photo session. As it happens we spent most of our time there shooting an animal which was not part of the zoo’s exhibits. At some point we saw a number of wooden pillars and black headed gulls (in their winter dress) sitting on them. Each bird used its own pillar which was disputed by newcomers every once in a while since the pillars were considerably less than the birds. Some birds just gave in and flew away (first couple of photos) while others made it perfectly clear that they would not leave their favourite spot no matter what (third photo). This went on for hours and we were completely captivated by the sight. The bird in the fourth photo just failed to remove the “owner” of the pillar while the bird in the last photo decided to sit on it and ignore all newcomers. There was plenty of sun (by UK standards) but  very high shutter speeds were still required to freeze the birds in midflight, so D300 was the choice with ISO set to 400 or 800. A fast lens stopped down to f/5.6 delivered some stunning images.
