"How much more there is now to living! Instead of our drab slogging forth and back to the fishing boats, there’s reason to life! We can lift ourselves out of ignorance, we can find ourselves as creatures of excellence and intelligence and skill. We can be free! We can learn to fly!"

Richard Bach, Jonathan Livingston Seagull

Seagull I (Stercorarius  skua, Family: Stercoraiidae; common name: Skua)

When you get a boat you normally see seagulls travelling with you for some time.. A usual sight, so usual in fact that it passes unnoticed. The sight of those birds "floating" in the air without moving their wings is always appealing.

Seagull II (Larus  michahelis, Family: Laridae; common name: Herring  Gull)

This unusual angle was really tempting. Using spot metering is essential to avoid serious underexposure. The white body of the bird helps a lot, too.

Seagull III (Larus  michahelis, Family: Laridae; common name: Herring  Gull)

Another shot of a seagull in which the bird is carefully framed according to the "rule of thirds". The clear blue sky brings up the word "summer" along with the word "travel" !

Seagull IV (Larus  michahelis, Family: Laridae; common name: Herring  Gull)

A close up of a seagull. In this particular shot the bird came as close as one meter from the camera. A high shutter speed along with panning were used to make sure the bird would stay in focus. The detail in the eye of the bird shows that the decision to follow its move was correct. When I saw this picture in full size on my monitor, I only wished I had used the 180 mm Tamron Macro lens.
