Eresus ruficapillus (Family: Eresidae; common names: Lady bird spider, Velvet spider) Other members of this genus are better studied and some information exists about them. E. ruficapillus is not so widespread as it has only be located in Southern Europe. This spider is found in forests close to tree trunks. The spider shown here was found close to a broken branch on which it stayed throughout our photo session. The orange upper part of the belly distinguishes it easily from the other species of the same genus. For some reason it is regarded as venomous by the locals although this is not firmly confirmed by the (poor) literature. Many thanks to Michael Negrini for identifying this spider. Photos
