"The very idea of a bird is a symbol and a suggestion to the poet. A bird seems to be at the top of the scale, so vehement and intense his life. . . The beautiful vagabonds, endowed with every grace, masters of all climes, and knowing no bounds - how many human aspirations are realised in their free, holiday-lives - and how many suggestions to the poet in their flight and song!" John Burroughs

Pelecanus onocrotalus (Family: Pelecanidae; common name: Great White Pelican)

This species differs from the Dalmatian Pelican, the only larger species of pelican, by its pure white, rather than greyish-white, plumage, a bare pink facial patch around the eye, black feathers at the edge of the wings and pinkish legs. It is not a usual visitor in Greece. Some of them might stay or even breed in the lakes of North Greece.

This particular bird was found wounded and was hospitalized at the Hellenic Wildlife Hospital (in the island of Aegina) till it was able to fly again. Hours after we took these shots, the bird was trapped and was later set free in lake Kerkini.
