Alcedo atthis (Family: Alcedinidae; common name: Common Kingfisher) The bird is always alert since it has to accomplish a number of tasks at the same time. It has to protect itself from enemies, look for its food, take care of its plumage, dive, eat etc. It moves very fast; you may see it in your viewfinder and by the time you press the shutter release button the bird may well not be in the frame. It actually launches itself in the air. We have included a number of photos showing this little beauty in a variety of positions, doing different things. It takes a long time before the bird accepts human presence in close vicinity. The bird is supposed to stay all year in Greece. The photos taken in Strophylia natural reserve, West Peloponnese. Photos by Mahi Goula and George Parchas. Shooting Data: 1. Camera: Canon 5D Mark II 2. Camera: Canon 5D Mark II 3. Camera: Canon 5D Mark II 4. Camera: Canon 5D Mark II 5. Camera: Canon 5D Mark II 6.
