Carelessness (European Shag)

"They were careless people...they smashed up things and creatures then retreated back into their money or their vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made.” F. Scott Fitzgerald

Carelessness (Phalacrocorax aristotelis desmarestii; common name European Shag)

I was out on a photo session on the beach when I noticed something hanging from this birds' bill. A closer look confirmed my worst suspicion: the bird had swallowed a piece of fishing line with the hook. I sincerely hope it will make it, though I imagine it will end up with a perforated oesophagus, which is fatal.

The bird probably ate a fish which was caught in the line and that made me think. We all derive great pleasure from Nature but we rarely get to see the effect of our individual actions on other forms of life.  In this instance the message is loud and clear: we need to be more considerate towards the environment and life around us.
