Puma concolour (family: Felidae; common names: cougar, mountain lion, panther, puma)

The Puma concolour is a mammal of the Felidae family, native to the Americas. This large, solitary cat has the greatest range of any wild terrestrial mammal in the Western Hemisphere, extending from Yukon in Canada to the southern Andes of South America. An adaptable, generalist species, the cougar is found in every major American habitat type. It is the second heaviest cat in the American continents after the jaguar, and the fourth heaviest in the world, along with the leopard, after the tiger, the lion and the jaguar, although it is most closely related to smaller felines.

We saw these magnificent animals lying in the shade in their enclosure. When I raised my camera the puma slightly raised its head and gave me a look but soon realised that there was nothing of interest there so it returned to its napping.

Baby Pumas

Our scheduled visit to Attica park was an absolute delight: we had the pleasure and privilege of meeting three absolutely gorgeous baby pumas born at the park in July 2008. Though our aim was to take close up photos of the cubs we spent more time playing with them than shooting. The selection of photos here show the animals at different moments while playing.

We would like to thank the staff at Attica Park for allowing us to see the cubs and play with them. You can read more about our day with them in Feline Encounters.
