Chatsworth House, Derbyshire, UK: The House
Chatsworth House is the seat of the Duke of Devonshire. It belongs to his family since 1549. The house is surrounded by vast, beautiful parks and hills. It is quite impressive and luxurious. Visitors will admire a unique collection of priceless paintings, furniture, neoclassical sculptures and all sorts of different treasures and collectables. Chatsworth has been selected as the United Kingdom's favourite country house several times.
The light conditions we encountered during our visit to this magnificent house ranged from almost total darkness to full sunshine while we had to deal with a variety of shooting topics, ranging from landscapes to close ups of statues. In short, get everything you own with you - and as many cameras you can carry. The house is indeed in top notch condition; its main difference from other historical houses in the UK is the vast collection of art. You can see pieces of art in almost every room you visit, ceramics, paintings, statues, you name it. We were surprised to see two paintings of Caravaggio in a corridor joining two wings, amongst tens of paintings of renowned artists. Definitely a place to visit even if photography is not your hobby. Selecting which photos to include in this presentation is really difficult.
Tripods are not allowed in the House, mainly due to the high amount of visitors it attracts. In this respect shooting the interior is a real challenge. If you are planning to take photos allow plenty of time inside the house - not so much for shooting as for waiting to shoot!
