“Moutzouris”, the small steam locomotive of Mt. Pelion
The small traditional locomotive of Pelion (Mountzouris) climbs the ever green slopes of Mt. Pelion in the middle of forests and breathtaking scenery.
The total length of the special, narrow gauge line is 28 Km and the trip used to start from the city of Volos and ending in the village Milees (meaning Apple trees) at an altitude of 400m. The railway was built at the end of the 19th century to serve the transportation of goods and passengers to a region which was at its best both financially and culturally.
This small train continued its difficult course in the mountain of the Centaurs till recently, even if only for tourists. The possibility to rent a well serviced old steam locomotive for this trip was available on request till recently.
This ended in March 2010 due to some damage. I hope the steam locomotive will be repaired soon so we can have the opportunity for a future ride. All photos show the old steam locomotive in one of its lasts trips. I am sure you agree that it will be a pity for such a beautiful train to be permanently immobilized.
