Cotylorhiza tuberculata (Family: Cepheidae; common name: Mediterranean jelly or fried egg jellyfish) One of the most common jellyfish in the Mediterranean sea and definitely the most colourful of all. Usually they are found in great numbers in the Aegean and the Adriatic sea. The animal can grow to 35 cm in diameter (the animal shown in these photos is a fully grown adult) and in contrast to most jellyfishes has an ability to move on its own (it does not necessarily follow water currents). In the sea it is a magnificent animal. It migrates vertically while various juvenile fishes are around it. Since photos of the sides and top of the animal are already included in its profile, I decided to focus on the underside of it with the many colorful tentacles. All shots taken in the Saronic gulf, summer 2010. Photos by John G. Reclos Shooting Data: 1. Camera: Nikon Coolpix L20 2. Camera: Nikon Coolpix L20 3. Camera: Nikon Coolpix L20 4.
