"There is the home where I would bide, if trees like men had souls inside,
Which is, of course, a fantasy none could conceive but dolts like me. . . .
Let others vision Heaven's gate, Dark Pine, I dream for me you wait.” Robert William Service

Aleppo Pine Resin
These photos show resin coming out from fresh cuts on the trunk and branches of Aleppo pine. Aleppo pine is endemic to the Mediterranean region and its resin has been used in Greece for over 2000 years in winemaking, resulting in the resinated wine called “Retsina”, still produced today. The unique optical characteristics of this resin offer nice photographic opportunities. It is transparent, gold colored and hardens in the air creating very interesting shapes which show an internal glow when the sun passes through them. In some of the photos you can see the scenery behind me presented upside down in the drops. Last, the head on sight of the cut on the trunk closely resembles a mutilated arm, the resin being the blood equivalent. In some of the photos, the use of flash was necessary to show details of the Aleppo pine trunk, which would otherwise stay in total darkness.
